SECULAR DHARMA TALK
The middle way and dead ends
Anna Markey, a dharma teacher in South Australia, gave this talk to One Mindful Breath, a secular dharma community in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. Anna has been exploring meditation practice and the Buddhadharma through a variety of traditions for more than 35 years.
As the lead teacher at Coast and City Sangha in the Adelaide and Fleurieu regions, she oversees a variety of groups and teaches two or three retreats a year. Anna’s interest lies in teaching meditation through an open, curious and gentle orientation.

Tuwhiri’s editorial board is pleased to welcome Mike Slott as our newest board member. The principal editor of the Secular Buddhist Network website, Mike also puts together their monthly email newsletter, Rethinking Dharma/ Reimagining Community. His book, Mindful Solidarity: A Secular Buddhist Democratic Socialist Dialogue was published by Tuwhiri in October.
Mike began his meditation practice in 2010, and is also a long-time political and labor movement activist. For more than thirty years, Mike was on the staff of several labor unions; currently he’s a part-time lecturer in labor history at Rutgers University, New Jersey. ⁂

Secular Buddhist Association merges into
Secular Buddhist Network
The US-based Secular Buddhist Association is in the process of merging into Secular Buddhist Network. One result is that SBN has expanded its offerings of meditation and reading groups.
SBN sponsors two meditation groups. A Sunday morning meditation group meets from 8am Pacific Time, 10am Central Time, 11am US Eastern Time. Now there is also a Sunday night Practice Circle, which meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from 6pm Pacific Time, 8pm Central Time, 9pm Eastern Time. Both groups start with a half hour of silent meditation followed by a discussion and sharing of experiences.
In addition, SBN offers two reading groups which discuss books, videos, articles, and podcasts related to secular dharma.
One group meets on the first Thursday of the month, sessions are 90 minutes long, and run from 10am Pacific Time, 12 noon Central Time, 1pm Eastern Time, and 6pm in the UK and Ireland.
The group set up by SBA will continue to meet on the first and third Sunday of the month from 6pm Pacific Time, 8pm Central Time, 9pm Eastern Time. ⁂
