What’s the book about? In short, Mike Slott asks:
How do we respond in a mindful and compassionate way to the social and political crises that we face?
Buddhist meditators and progressive political activists rarely interact, he suggests. Activists may dismiss Buddhism as irrelevant in the face of struggles for urgent political change, while many Buddhist meditators believe activists fail to recognize that human suffering arises not simply from unjust social institutions but also from our tendency toward greed, anger, and delusion.
In Mindful Solidarity, Mike Slott encourages political activists and Buddhist practitioners to connect with and learn from each other. A secular form of Buddhism and democratic socialist politics complement each other, he argues. We need to pursue both individual and social transformation.
Political activists with a meditation practice and imbued with an ethic of care will be more effective as they work to create fundamental social changes. At the same time, the Buddhist path of individual transformation is enriched by making it more ethically and socially focused.
A lifelong US political and labor movement activist, Mike Slott has been a Buddhist practitioner since 2010. He is the editor of the Secular Buddhist Network website, and also responsible for their newsletter, Rethinking the Dharma/Reimagining Community.

SECULAR DHARMA TALK
Emotion-Focussed Mindfulness Therapy by Bill Gayner
Emotion-focused mindfulness therapy, or EFMT, is an approach to mindfulness which I’ve developed as a therapist to help people resolve inner conflicts, writes Bill Gayner. This includes situations where one part of ourself is beating up another part, or part of us is suppressing feelings. It can also be used if clients are impacted by early life trauma or are in conflict with other people. In this discussion, I’ll be covering the basics of EFMT, then comparing and contrasting it with secular Buddhism.
