Taking Tuwhiri places in 2020
January 2020
Ngā mihi o te tau hou
That’s how New Zealanders offer greetings for the new year in te reo Maori. Tuwhiri got off to a flying start with two great books and an online course, so what can we reasonably expect to share with the world in 2020?
Wait, wait … first of all, what do you see Tuwhiri doing over the next few years? We’d very much appreciate your views on what Tuwhiri might do to help deepen people’s understanding of secular dharma. Let us know, please, by completing our survey:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2HV9DTQ
The name of one participant will be drawn out of a hat, and they will receive a copy of What is this? Ancient questions for modern minds signed by the authors.
Buddhadharma
The Spring 2020 issue of Buddhadharma magazine will include an excerpt from What is this? Ancient questions for modern minds, as well as a quarter page on Tuwhiri and our books.
Tricycle
In March an excerpt from What is this? Ancient questions for modern minds will be going onto the Tricycle website during their annual meditation month.
Also, Tricycle are in the process of producing a ‘Buddhism for Beginners’ sub-site to which Tuwhiri has contributed a 14-part introduction to secular dharma. This part of the sub-site is likely to go live by the middle of the year.
Looking for a gift?
Send your friend a copy of What is this? Ancient questions for modern minds, while a practice leader in your sangha might well put After Buddhism, a workbook to good use. Get these from your local bookstore, and they’re available on our online store, where prices are in New Zealand dollars and include delivery to wherever your friend may be.

Courses
Do you know of any courses currently being run, or about to be run, using After Buddhism and After Buddhism, a workbook? We are aware that:
* On the northern beaches of Sydney, Beaches Sangha will be working through After Buddhism and After Buddhism, a workbook together this year. They meet at Oxford Falls Peace Park, cnr Wakehurst Parkway and Dreadnought Rd, Oxford Falls, on the first Thursday of the month starting in February 2020. More info at www.beaches-sangha.org/p/whats-on_27.html.
* Upaya Sangha of Houston will be running a course using After Buddhism and After Buddhism, a workbook on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from January through May 2020. For more information and to register go to upayatucson.org/study-group-winter-spring-2020.
* In south Wales, Cardiff Secular Dharma Group is part-way through their course. For more information and to connect with this group write to lorna.sbn@gmail.com.
* The Santa Monica-based Sati Sangha has successfully run two courses for online groups. More info from satisangha.org/meditation-near-me.
And one of the stretch goals of our Kickstarter was a free online course using the material in the book. Thanks primarily to Mike Slott, that course is online and available for individuals to go through, and for a group of people to go through together. Accessible through the new Secular Buddhist Network website there’s more on this at secularbuddhistnetwork.org/courses-retreats.

German translation of After Buddhism, a workbook
One of the promises we made during the Kickstarter for After Buddhism, a workbook was that it would be translated into another language if we reached a certain level of pledge.
We reached this stretch goal, thanks to you all, and can report that a German translation is on its way, with the book to be published by Buddha-Stiftung in Heidelberg. We’ll let you know when it’s coming out.

Advertising
Equals more sales, but we don’t have a budget for advertising and not enough sales (yet) to provide an income that will enable us to buy the advertising we’d like to see. or by sending your donation through PayPal to generosity@tuwhiri.nz. New Zealanders can make a charitable donation for Tuwhiri to 38 9019 0064662 07.

Donations and bequests
Without our Kickstarter Supporters and our Tuwhiri Sponsors we would not be here at all. We’re looking forward to a creative future, sharing the dharma.
If you would like to support Tuwhiri with a donation, there are many ways your gift can be used and acknowledged that can be a lasting tribute and legacy. It might, for instance, enable Tuwhiri to produce a particular book, offer an advance to a teacher to write a book, create an online course, or support the educational development of a community. There’s more on this here:

Did you get this newsletter from a friend? It goes out two or three times a year, and this is where you go to add your email address to the mailing list:

Finally
What does Tuwhiri mean to you? Would you wear a Tuwhiri t-shirt, perhaps? Here’s the design that may go on one. Let us know.
